We have been busy with soething very exciting - a natural pond. Read on below to see what was involved.
Client Brief:
To collect all storm water from roofs, courtyards, driveways and garden run off, and to store this water in a holding tank.
The Site:
Situated on a golfing estate, this property is one of several properties which share an open storm water trench. This trench runs across the property just 6 meters from the home, directly in view from the living area of the home.
The Design:
Instead of building underground tanks, it was agreed to build a natural pond as it would add tremendous value to the aesthetics of the garden. There were many civil, municipal and estate regulations to overcome, such as;
- Overcoming the risk of flooding should the pond fail in excessive rainfall.
- The safety of visitors and the public.
- The capacity to recovery between each rain storm.
- The quality of the water during times of no rain fall.
After gaining the assistance of several specialists, all parties involved with this project are very excited with the successful outcome of this unique design.
The design is about more than just the functional aspect of managing the storm water on the property, but our input as landscapers also takes into consideration the aesthetics of such an exercise. The use of genuine rocks, the sleeper brined over the wetland, the surrounding planting and the lawn which runs down to the water’s edge, the concealing of pumps and air-conditioning units, and the little details to accommodate ducks and small birds alike.
To End:
Conserving our precious water resource is fast becoming an accepted norm amongst those who understand the value of water.
Rather than flushing down the loo, let us turn it into something new!

The start of 2011 has been an exciting and interesting time thus far. In just 5 weeks, we have been involved with a number of varied projects, such as. The establishment of a horse stud paddock with suitable grass varieties. We have successfully designed a wetland and natural pond for the purification of contaminated water on a poultry farm. An old garden was revamped, reusing all existing plants and introducing new varieties of indigenous plants.
In a small townhouse garden, we transplanted 2 huge Bamboo Palms and converted an old Koi Pond into a natural water feature, complete with water plants and surround to compliment.
We are currently busy with landscaping of gardens around a large warehouse. The use of hard-landscaping includes rocks, decorative gravel and huge post measuring 1 cubic meter. Part of this project also includes the eradication of alien invasive plants around the perimeter of the property, and alongside a water stream.
Over and above these larger projects, there have been several smaller landscaping projects which have included services such as, instant turf, building and planting of retainer block walls, summer pruning and corporate maintenance.
